USDA grant allows free meals for Rockwood students
Over the course of the past few months, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has allowed students access to breakfast and lunch, with no cost to the families. The funding for the meals comes from the COVID-19 relief plan from earlier in the year.
The planning for the funding started all the back at the start of covid in the spring.
“It allowed for students and families to access meals through the summer,” Dr. Corey Sink, Eureka High School Principal, said.
It was then extended through the rest of the school year as per October 9th.
“As our nation recovers and reopens, we want to ensure that children continue to receive the nutritious breakfasts and lunches they count on during the school year wherever they are and however they are learning,” Sonny Perdue, The US Secretary of Agriculture, said.
For students that are returning in person, meals will be provided in the morning and afternoon every day.
“Breakfast will start at 8 to about 8:45 in the commons, students can come in, grab breakfast if they want, then eat on the way to class,” Sink said.
Between 4th and 6th there will be 3 satellite stations, Gym B atrium, the theater atrium and outside the school store. At these stations, they will have snacks like fruit, granola bars and pop tarts.
“Grab-and-go lunch at the high school will occur sometime after 1:00,” Carmen Fisher, Director of Child Nutrition, said. “Students can pick up a sandwich, some cold and some hot, options include hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, cold turkey sandwiches to eat on the go as you leave.”
For students that are staying online that want meals, the administration is asking them to sign up for curbside pickup using the google form. The form will correspond with the following week. Sign up is not required, but is appreciated to help the lunch staff know how many meals to put together.
Meal pick up locations are at Crestview Middle School, LaSalle Springs Middle School, Selvidge Middle School, and Rockwood South Middle School on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m to 9:15 a.m.
