A large part about sports is the uniforms that represent the team. From the glammed out cheer uniforms to the simple yet adorable girls tennis uniforms, EHS has some of the most distincitive uniforms go to the school’s spirit teams including Cheer, Color guard, and Goldenline. Yet, the sparkling costumes can come with issues.
“The white uniform is tight, itchy and uncomfortable,” senior cheerleader Mckenna Kissel said.
Cheer has multiple uniforms for varsity, with JV’s uniforms coming from passed down varsity uniforms. With multiple uniforms with different colors and designs, there arises more opportunities to face uniform challenges. Cheer has not received a new football uniform for over 4 years, and many of the current uniforms show signs of wear and tear.
“The purple ones are just old Golden Line costumes and they’ve turned blue from old sweat and whatever, which is kind of gross,” sophomore Color guard member Natalie Royal said.
Color guard is working to gain a new costume that better matches the theme of the Marching Band/Color guard performance. Along with that, members of Color guard are hoping that their new uniforms will be longer than the current ones, which presents difficulties when they lay on the ground during performance.
“The hardest thing for Goldenline is that we only have a specific number of all of the uniforms if they’re not brand new. So they’re all certain sizes and you just have to find one that you fit into,” senior Goldenline dancer Audrey Clark said.
Occasionally, Goldenline uniforms will have to be taken out of usage, which lowers the number of options the dancers have to choose from size wise. Although they get a new uniform every year for competitions, those uniforms may not utilize school colors, so they are often retired and stored as backup uniforms.
Girls tennis is a larger sports organization, with around 50 girls on the team. As the team grows, the number of uniforms needed also grows, forcing the team to get creative with uniform options.
“We don’t get any of our uniforms from a Eureka source. The top is Lululemon and the skirt is Gold Hinge,” sophomore Elise Orendain said.
Because the uniforms are used for a school team, players get a discount on the purchase price. Currently, girls tennis is one of the only teams that purchases a new uniform every year, for returning players and new players. Yet, even with the new uniforms every year there can still be challenges.
“The outfit looks muted with the top being white and the skirt being such a pale purple that it sometimes looks white. The white top is also a little see through so you can basically see underneath it,” junior Lily Schickler said. While not noticeable from a distance, when closer you can see the difference from where the skirt is vs where actual skin is. While the top of the tank top has extra fabric so it is not see through, the rest of the tank top is more noticeably see through.
“Uniforms are important because they’re a really fun way to express ourselves and show school spirit, while feeling good about ourselves and having fun,” Clark said.
