Time to party like it’s 1985! Robbie Hart is engaged to the girl of his dreams, Linda, having a ton of fun singing at weddings every weekend and spending time with all his friends. Except, once his wedding comes up, Linda is nowhere to be found. Is it possible she did the unthinkable? Yep. She stood him up. Now, even after all of that, he is set to help one of his friends, Julia Sullivan, plan her wedding with Glenn Gulia, a wealthy bonds worker. However, could it be possible that without Linda in the picture Robbie is beginning to grow feelings for someone else?
If you are a big romance and comedy fan — like myself — this is definitely a classic Adam Sandler movie you could get a kick out of. Funny jokes along with sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens with the romantic interests next have always been huge interests of mine in movies. Not to mention, I’m a big fan of the random subtle details that hint at characters progression.
“Why would you wanna dance with somebody who doesn’t wanna dance with you?” Hart said.
At the very start of the movie, Robbie’s enthusiasm for weddings and romance in general was quite apparent. With singing being one of his favorite hobbies, he knew his way around a microphone. And once he met Julia, a waitress for the venue he often sang at, he was even more excitement for the gigs he got. She was a soon-to-be bride, so they especially had something to bond over. However, we notice a shift after his wedding, and we all know what happened there.
As soon as Robbie had officially heard from Linda that she didn’t want to marry him anymore, his excitement for love and weddings seemed to diminish. We got a beautiful rendition of “Love Stinks” when he finally did make his return to his wedding gigs. Which, while we’re on the topic, Adam Sandler’s crashout scenes have got to be some of the funniest parts of the movies he’s in.
Even though his first wedding back definitely wasn’t his best, after ripping the bandaid off he was able to start getting back into his groove and started singing for other fun events. Once he came back to the venue the second time, he decided to sing at a Bar Mitzvah.
Following the Bar Mitzvah, Julia asked Robbie if he’d be willing to help get her wedding plans finalized. Even though he politely declined at first, he eventually gave in. And this is where the powerful romance finally started to form.
Robbie and Julia began spending countless hours on prepping for her wedding. They picked out a cake, found a dress, a limo driver — one of Robbie’s friends, Sammy — and suffered through a few rough performances of other wedding singers. Over time, you could sense their feelings for each other starting to build. But, they didn’t realize it quite yet.
When they went to go visit Faye, someone helping with planning the wedding, even she thought they were together. Better yet, she thought they were engaged and believed they’d be truly happy together. Perhaps this was one of the first hints.
Throughout their time together, Robbie quickly picks up on the littlest of details. When she forgot her jacket in Sammy’s limo, he even remembered where they were when she took it off and what she said while doing so. This, my friends, was hint number two.
Now, since this third one is even more apparent than the others, this may not even qualify as only a hint. Robbie arrived at Julia and Holly’s house the next day to return her jacket right as the two cousins were in the middle of discussing Julia’s wedding day kiss. After going back and forth with ideas, Holly finally suggested that Julia could practice the kiss on Robbie.
Finally, the feelings between Robbie and Julia were mutual. But still, they were in the denial phase.
As they continued to work through Julia’s wedding plans, she became more and more uncertain about whether or not marrying Glenn was the right thing to do and more comfortable being with Robbie. Meanwhile, he was insistent on staying to the side and not harming their relationship. Even though that’s very sweet of him, that all flew out of the window when he and Holly went on a double date with Glenn and Julia.
After random discussions and several drinks at the bar, Holly and Julia left the table for a bit since Julia wasn’t feeling great. While they were gone, Robbie and Glenn got to talking, revealing that Glenn has been cheating on Julia since she’s been distracted by all the wedding plans. You could say that this was Robbie’s motivation to win Julia over.
Hold on to your seats, readers. This is when the story gets even crazier.
We notice Robbie’s feelings grow even stronger, and he went to tell Sammy about what Glenn said at the bar. After a short but sweet pep talk, Robbie decided to go tell Julia the truth about how he feels.
Before Robbie arrived, Julia was trying on her wedding dress to show her mom. However, she ends up bursting into tears as her worry for marrying Glenn boiled up to the top. She even mentioned how much time she’d been spending with Robbie, but, her mom just labels it as cold feet, and goes to get Julia’s vail. Julia took a look in the mirror and began practicing her introduction as “Mrs. Glenn Gulia”. But after a few times resulting in disappointment, she switched to “Mrs. Robbie Hart”, and her face lit up with joy.
This is when Robbie showed up, seeing Julia through her window. She was smiling at herself in the mirror while wearing her wedding dress. Take a second to process that. From his perspective, she’s excited about her wedding with Glenn, si there’s no chance for him to get with her. And unfortunately, he turned around and walked back to the bar he and Sammy were at.
Later into the night, Robbie drunkenly stumbled home, where Linda had been awaiting his arrival. Oh boy. Even though he ended up passing out, she took matters into her own hands and spent the night. As you can imagine, he ended up kicking her out once he woke up. Hold on, we almost forgot about the part where Julia went to confess her feelings for Robbie but Linda answered the door since he was asleep. Double oh boy.
On the bright side, we now know for sure that they were both on the same page. The issue is, now Julia wanted to speed up the wedding process and get married to Glenn as soon as possible. Before you know it, they’re on a plane to Las Vegas.
Following the anniversary of Rosie, a woman who Robbie gave singing lessons to, and her husband, Robbie began his journey to go find Julia and tell her how he feels. On his way out the door, Holly stopped him abruptly to inform him that Julia was on a plane to Vegas. Nevertheless, Robbie was still determined to catch the girl of his dreams, and drove to the airport with Sammy and Holly. On the way there, he wrote a new song.
Once he was on the plane, in first class might I add, he was surrounded by a group of people as he told them the whole story. After completing his storytime, one of the flight attendants came to tell everyone about this guy who was being disrespectful towards her. Robbie froze when he recognized the words the man used. As he peaked his head out into the main part of the plane, he saw none other than Glenn and Julia. Right there on the same exact flight. Now, Robbie knew what he had to do.
He rallied all the people in first class to set up a minor performance. After the one and only Billy Idol introduces him, he began singing the song he wrote in the car. As soon as he sang the first line, Julia’s face lit up. She knew that voice. After a few lines he walked through the curtains exiting first class, and Julia’s smile grew even bigger.
Sweetest thing ever, right?
Love is a magical thing to witness, especially in cases like this. It gives you a hope for the future, and a sense of “if he wanted to, he would”. This movie is such a vibrant and fun way of making a love story not only interesting to follow, but also hilarious at the same time.
Use this as your reminder to never take your eyes off of the things you care about the most. Even if they may be steering in a different direction at the moment, doesn’t mean they will forever.
