Wildcats roll past Marquette in rout
The Girls Varsity Basketball Team took on the Marquette Mustangs and won by a convincing score of 83-54, Feb. 11.
The Wildcats dominated the first quarter with a score of 25-11.
“We were flat out shooting the ball well in the first,” Mr. James Alsup, head coach, said. “We were raining threes most of the time.”
The second quarter was more of the same, with the Wildcats outscoring the Mustangs, 26-13.
“As a team we all got down the floor on fast breaks,” Mallory Proffer, guard, said. “Torie [Allen] looked for the open players and the easy layups on the other end, too.”
The Wildcats took a 51-24 lead into the half, but Marquette was able to pull within 17 in the third quarter.
“Marquette’s a good program, and we knew they were going to get chewed out during the half,” Coach Alsup said. “They came out with energy, and we came out flat.”
With the Wildcats up big in the fourth quarter, the starters left the floor with four minutes left, giving the bench important minutes.
“Those kids work hard in practice,” Coach Alsup said. “This is one of those years that we’re so strong at the top that the kids sitting on that bench are really good but don’t get as many minutes as they should.”
The Wildcats coasted through the fourth and ended up with a 29 point victory.
Torie Allen, guard, finished with 18 points, multiple assists and a plethora of steals.
“Torie’s a guard that is great at distributing the ball,” Coach Alsup said. “She knows exactly when to keep the ball and when to pass it off.”
Lindsey McCoy, forward, finished one rebound short of a double-double, ending up with 11 points and 9 boards.
“Lindsey is one of our main leaders,” Proffer said. “She’s a great rebounder and has great athleticism.”
Proffer finished with nine points without much second-half play time.
The Wildcats are ranked fourth in the state for Class 5 teams according to Maxpreps.
The next matchup for the Wildcats is at Hazelwood West, Monday, Feb. 17.
