Behind the badge with Officer Grittini
Officer Brett Grittini is currently in his fourth year as the School Resource Officer at Eureka High School. I sat down with Officer Grittini to get to know him outside the uniform.
Can you give me a rundown of your daily life at work?
I’m here for any law-related issues, things outside the school that get brought to my attention. The most important thing is the safety of the students.
What’s your favorite part about your job?
Relationships. I love being around the kids. I feel like they keep me young. [I like] being around the sports. Watching basketball, football, coaching baseball, all those things are a huge bonus in my job.
What is it like coaching baseball?
It gives me an even more personal relationship with kids being able to pass on my experiences from when I played and I coached before I came here. Now I’m not coaching summer teams because I’m helping down here. It’s just a great part of my job that Coach Daffron let me be apart of. It’s an out-of-the-uniform relationship. I’m no longer Officer Grittini. I’m a coach.
What’s your favorite sport to watch or to play?
To watch is college football. I’m a humongous Michigan fan so that’s why it was even better Hassan Haskins went there. I’m all things Detroit fan. I’m from Michigan. Favorite sport to coach or be around is baseball, but it’s a very boring thing to watch. I loved to play baseball in high school. I was a pitcher and third baseman.
When you’re not in uniform, what’s your favorite thing to do?
I like hanging out with my wife and kid. My daughter right now is big into playing Barbies. I try to play with her, but she says I’m not any good at it. We just took her to Indy. We go to the Magic House, probably the Science Center next. We like to keep her active. Every chance I get, I like to be with them. I like to golf. I used to golf quite a bit. Now, with a kid, it’s tougher.
What is your favorite TV show?
I still watch “Jersey Shore.” I think that’s great. Just binge-watched over the weekend with my wife. It’s one of the things we started years ago and we still watch to this day. It’s a great show. I will never not watch it. I don’t care if those guys are 50. I watch “Entourage” on repeat. That show’s been over for a while, but I’ve watched it probably 30 times. When it ends, I start it over. I finished “Dexter,” but I don’t like watching that again since I already know what happens. I watch “Blacklist” now.
What is your favorite movie?
I watch everything and remember most of the words to them. I don’t do scary movies. Sergeant Werges and I still go to the movies together. My wife doesn’t like the movies I like and Sergeant Werges doesn’t like scary movies, but his wife does. I have never seen “Star Wars.” I’ve seen “SpaceBalls,” but I’ve never seen “Star Wars.”
What is your favorite food?
Pizza. I like Jalapenos on my pizza. I like it spicy. Imo’s does it pretty good.
