Golden coins
Matt Koltun (10) and his family have a multi-generational tradition that started before his family came to America from Czechoslovakia.
Every year on Christmas and right before dinner each member of his family washes their hands in gold coins. The coins are the same ones from year to year and have been passed down in the Koltun family.
“Washing our hands in gold coins is supposed to symbolize good fortune for the upcoming year,” Koltun said. “It’s cool tradition we have, but the coins are just a symbol, not anything real. God’s in control, not the coins.”
NOTE: Matt was unsure if it was a Czech tradition or just a Koltun tradition. I researched it on the web and could not find anything related in Czechoslovakia traditions.
