In 2007, Officer Derek Ploeger left the halls of Eureka as a senior, only to return as the Student Resource Officer in 2021. During his four years as a student, Ploeger was a part of the football team....

“I play varsity lacrosse here at Eureka. I started playing the sport in sixth grade, and then I played club in eighth grade. I wanted to play lacrosse because all of my friends started playing it back in middle school. I didn’t even know lacrosse existed, to be honest until they told me. I was doing gymnastics at the time, and I kind of was starting to like lacrosse more - I liked playing as a team more than competing by myself. With lacrosse, I have other people to rely on and it’s never all about me. I still really like lacrosse; my favorite part is probably towards the end of the season whenever it’s Senior Night or the last game where everyone is super excited. Sports are important to a students’ well-being because it really helps with your mental health to be active and to be a part of a team. If I wasn’t involved in lacrosse, I would for sure find another sport for me. I hope to get a scholarship for college in the future; even if I don’t, I will continue to play somehow. I want to continue with it because it’s a good way to make friends and keep yourself on track, since my grades affect my team and not only me. My advice to people scared to try a sport would be just do it. Even if you don’t have the skill set, the coaches can teach you good skills and you can practice that. But, if you don’t give effort, you won’t make it.”

“Dance is just a way for me to portray how I'm feeling or to be another character. Whether it's through dance or theater. I think that being able to express yourself through any art form is extremely important, especially when growing up. Everyone goes through lots of struggles in life and should have a healthy outlet. Before I started dancing, I was always very stressed out with everything. I was a very tense and shy kid-- I didn't talk with anyone and just kept to myself most of the time. As soon as I got into dance and started meeting all these people, that’s when I started to become the person I am today-- a performer and a social butterfly."

“My favorite fashion designer is Virgil Abloh. He is the creator of the brand Off White and he just became a creative director for Louis Vuitton. I think that the exclusivity of the brand is amazing because it just makes people want it even more. Some of my biggest inspirations would be Tyler, the Creator, Kanye West and Coco Chanel because they all started from nothing and they got to where they are today. Kylie Jenner is one of my biggest fashion inspirations. I’m currently working on a vogue pattern dress because I love couture. After high school I want to go to college and study fashion design and merchandising. One day I hope to have my own clothing brand.”

“I took Photo 1 second semester of freshman year and I thought it was pretty fun, so I got a camera for my birthday last April and I’ve been taking pictures ever since. When I do shoots for people, I make a decent amount of money and I’m able to post them on social media and share them with people. I feel like I have a thing I really like to do early on, and maybe if photography takes off for me and I’m able to see a future with it, I’ll know what I want to do in college or after. My favorite part of it is being creative, getting to choose the shoots and styles. I'm really into fashion photography, so finding new styles and designs and ways to be more creative with my shoots is fun.” - Quinn Thomas, sophomore

“When I was a sophomore in high school, I wanted to be a fighter pilot, but then thinking about it more I couldn’t even handle the upside down rides at Six Flags without being sick. So then I turned that into maybe I should be an engineer to help build the fighter planes, but my math teacher went to college to be an engineer and he told me how boring it was. By the time I was a senior, I decided to be a teacher. My mom was a teacher for a long time and she said not to be a social studies teacher because back then you had to be a football coach or teach P.E. to be a history teacher. So then I thought about English, but it seemed like a lot of work to read all the essays and other work, and I didn't want to do that, so I choose math. And I was a math teacher for 21 years before I decided to be an administrator at Eureka.”

“I am shocked. I am trying to soak it all in. I am really appreciative of my parents and family. It's nice to be recognized. I was shocked when Mr. Crouther played his trumpet. I was confused sitting in my office and they kept trying to keep me in my office. The rumor on the street is that I get to spend the rest of the day with my family. I am very thankful that everyone is here supporting me. I had no idea that I was going to get this award.
