Plucking the strings, Kyli Smith, violin, plays ‘Mock Morris’ by Percy Grainger during Mary White’s sixth hour symphonic orchestra class, March 1. “Before I came into the Rockwood School District, I lived in a place where we didn’t have orchestra in our schools,” Smith said. “I had to take private lessons to play. I did some summer camps before sixth grade and have kept doing it since middle school. I have always liked music. Before starting the violin, I played piano for around 10 years. I saw people play violin and I just knew it was what I wanted to play. At first, it was frustrating because it was hard to learn. Eventually, I met great teachers who motivated me to keep going and get better as a player.”

We got the grant and just planned it out,” Reisig said. “Second semester is harder. Everyone gets sick of school and it can be hard for them to keep their focus. E!Crew gives the freshmen their first group to connect with and that is important.”

Baby consoled, Emma Miller (10) feeds her electronic baby during Rachel Haywood’s Child Development 1 class, Feb. 7. “I enjoy Child Development because you get to work with the electronic babies,” Miller said. “It is fun to have the feeling of being a mother without the responsibility of a real life child. Stage plan done, Jenna Nicholas (11) attaches a light bulb during Mr. EHS stage preparations after school, Jan. 24. “We are working on the specials lights so when the 6 contestants who make it to the finals, they will all have lights on them,” Nicholas said. “I do both tech and acting, but when I do tech I like how it influences the production. It adds so much to the show. If even one person messes up the lighting, the show loses credibility no matter how good the actors are. I am most excited for seeing who wins Mr. EHS. It is always exciting to see who is going to win.”

Trying to shoot, Kennedy Demoulin attempts to get around her Webster Groves opponent during the girls varsity basketball game, Jan. 9. “Ever since I was 10, I’ve played and I’ve played all three years of high school. I like the intensity of it and the aggressiveness that we have as a team,” Demoulin said. “I also like all of the girls on the team, they’re sweet and fun to be around. I think that was on of my best games that I’ve had all season. They were a really tough team to play against, but we fought back. We ended up losing, but we could have definitely won.” The Wildcats lost.

Not only would the addition of a soccer team fulfill the desires of soccer fans, but it would provide more opportunities for local athletes.

Up against competition, Kennedy Demoulin, forward, looks for someone to pass to during the girls varsity basketball game against Kirkwood, Dec. 11. “During the game, we had a lot of mistakes, but we also had a lot of successes,” Demoulin said. “During practice, we are working on improving those mistakes, but also focusing on what we did right so we can continue that. I enjoy the girls on the team. It is always fun. We connect well. Each game, we get so much better, and it is awesome seeing our improvement. The trust we have in each other on the floor improves when we have those good relationships. The way we share the ball becomes better, too.” The Wildcats lost, 42 to 56.

Keeping the ball in bounds, Obeydah Suliman, wide forward, tries to cut the ball to the center during the boys varsity soccer game at Kirkwood, Oct. 23. “The game was back and forth., We would lose the ball and then they would get it. They would get past us and then we would steal the ball back and do the same,” Suliman said. “I was upset that we couldn’t go into penalty kicks to finish the game. Their field didn’t have lights, so we just had to stop. We for sure would have won if we would have. We kept thinking about the time and just focused to hard on scoring. We weren’t focused.” The Wildcats tied in double overtime, 1 to 1.

Grabbing at his opponent’s jersey, Ethan Valenti, midfield, battles for possession during the boys varsity soccer game against Mehlville, Oct. 2. “The game went okay,” Valenti said. “I felt like I played well, but as a team, we played okay. We had a lot of chances to score but didn’t execute. I decided to play soccer at school because I played Academy, but 20 other players and I had a falling out with the club, so we decided to quit. I picked up with the school to continue soccer. I like to play for the school and the community. The team is sort of like a family. Every player supports you. The hardest part of playing midfield is the running. You also have to go into some hard tackles and sometimes it hurts.” The Wildcats won, 1 to 0.
