Flash flooding strikes Eureka, again

Rockwood School District canceled classes because of flooding, Aug. 26.
RSD made the call following bus delays after major road closures, particularly Highway 141 at I-44.
As for Eureka, both Main and Central streets shut down.
At EHS, the softball, baseball and practice football fields all flooded.
This is the third time in four years that RSD has closed school for flooding. The floods of 2015 and 2017 both called off classes and notably flooded the Eureka area.
RSD made the call shortly after 8 a.m. Middle-school students were already either en route or at school. High school students had a late-start and would not begin school until 9:58.
Washington School District also closed their doors in response to the flooding.
The National Weather Service reports that the Eureka area saw about three inches of rain in a 24-hour period and roughly six inches in the past week.
NWS urges drivers to turn around and avoid flooded roads, as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
While the water has began receding from EHS, additional precipitation is expected between 5 p.m. and midnight tonight. A flood-advisory warning is in effect for the St. Louis County area until Aug. 30.
