This is Belle’s fourth semester on the Yearbook Production staff. In her free time, she enjoys watching Netflix, hanging out with her friends and playing with her puppies and crested gecko. Words on her hand, Kayla Hill (10) models for a photography class, March 6. “I’m usually a model. A lot of times, they’re really interesting ideas people come up with. They’re really powerful. I really enjoy being able to work with the people who are taking the photos and get them what they want,” Hill said. “My best friend is in Photo 2 and she wanted me to be a model for an abuse photo. She’s used me ever since then. It sends out a message, but it scares a lot of people. People know exactly what they want me to do, so they have me move in a specific way and do exactly what they want and it turns out exactly how they think it will.”

Erasing her paper, Jessica Smegner (10) works on her still-life project in Kristina Welch’s sixth hour Art Fundamentals class, Feb. 21. “I don’t really enjoy art,” Smegner said. “I am just taking it because it is required. I like history and science, those are my two favorites. I don’t like working on my still-life especially when the lights are off. It makes me tired.”

Mario Kart started, Megan Mocker and Fiona Walsh (11) play during the Student Council winter energizer, Feb. 8. “I thought the Mario Kart theme was different. With this theme, it was interactive. We could dress up as characters and play Mario games,” Walsh said. “I chaired the scavenger hunt so I knew where all the pieces were, so I couldn't participate. With Mario Kart, I didn’t know anything about it, so I actually got to participate. During second semester, everyone is just down and tired. The energizer just brings up everyone’s spirits.”

New club beginning, Sarah Sheehy (12) listens in on Literature Club’s first meeting, Jan. 15. “I am actually not in Literature Club. I don’t have time,” Sheehy said. “I only went for a little to support my friend, Tony DiCampo. We played mad-libs and that was fun. We also played a game where we wrote a story based on a theme and then we passed it onto the next person so they continued that. It was fun. It sounds like a fun club, but with theatre everyday, it’s hard to make time for this every week.”

Arms spread wide, Claire Dunn swam the 100m fly during the girls swim and dive meet at Marquette, Jan. 7. “I’ve been swimming for six years. I did competitive swim and now I do high school. It’s really fun,” Dunn said. “I really love hanging out with my friends and the social end. I meet new friends and people I wasn’t close with in the past, I’ve gotten a lot closer with. It’s just fun to get together as a team. I like all of the fun we have together. Whether it’s in the pool or out of the pool, we just have fun and make things fun, even if it’s serious. It was my first time swimming the 100m fly this year and it was good.” The Wildcats lost.

Tinsel being hung, Savannah Lesher (11) decorates holiday trees in the commons with StuCo after school, Dec. 3. “The holiday trees brings everyone together,” Lesher said. “It doesn't matter what religion or who you are, everybody can come together this time of the year and have a fun time. It exemplifies that everybody has different beliefs. They’re holiday trees so everybody can be involved.”

Signing “boring,” Allyson Metteer (10) practices her sign language for her expressive about an office where she tells a story during Julie Montgomery’s sixth hour American Sign Language 1 class, Nov. 8. “I used boring because I was pretending that I didn’t have any appointments in my work day,” Metteer said. “I took ASL because I thought it would be more fun that taking any other language. My older sister took French, and I wanted to do something different than her. I enjoy learning all the signs and interacting with my friends using sign language. It will be useful later on in my career because if someone who is deaf needs help, I will be able to communicate with them.”

Pool session underway, Brady Flanagan (9) does a flip off the diving board during Student Health and Wellness day, Oct. 22. “I think the day is helpful because it is a good opportunity for students to have fun,” Flanagan said. “It is a way to get out of sitting down and learning at a desk all day. I did the aquatics session because I wanted to get some energy out of me and I like to swim. I liked being able to jump off the diving board and just mess around with my friends.”

Scary face designed, Anna Reed (10) carves her pumpkin during the Innovative Minds club meeting after school, Oct. 18. “We decided to carve pumpkins because it is close to Halloween,” Reed said. “One of the leaders planned it all out. We brought our own pumpkins and Mrs. [Lindsey] Mueller brought us carving tools. We could be creative and design our own face or use the templates the tools provided. I wanted to be creative, so I designed my own scary face to carve.”

Ready to serve, Elizabeth Edmiston, setter, serves the ball during the girls JV volleyball game against Lafayette, Oct. 2. “The game was intense. At first, I was nervous,” Edmiston said. “After the first set, I got into my zone and was more comfortable playing. I wanted to play and have fun. I was nervous because I feel like everyone else on the team was nervous. Everytime we play Lafayette, we aren’t really expected to win and we have a lot of pressure to try even harder to win because we haven't beat them in such a long time. I like playing volleyball because you get to meet so many more people than you would just being at school. It is fun and I enjoy it. During the tough rival games, we try to play our best, even if we aren’t playing that well. We try to play our best and come together always. It is hard as a setter when the passing isn’t the best because I have to run all over the court. I am still expected to make a good set even when I am not given good passes.” The Wildcats lost in the first two sets.

Hands emphasizing her point, Dina Ahmed (11) talks during the E2Y2 meeting during sixth hour, Sept. 24. “I enjoyed the fact that there were more people there. There were new faces to see, especially if you had been there for two or more years. It felt fresh with more opinions,” Ahmed said. “I like that in E2Y2 I have a place to talk about things. I see a lot of these people at school everyday, but in E2Y2, I get to know them personally and their struggles. It feels like we are building a bond. We discussed how certain mindsets cycle. As you grow up, you challenge that mindset. You either conform and teach the next generation that or you challenge it and teach them something different. We talked about how we have the power to look at our challenges and our situations and change them. We all have that power, even though we might be young. You should do you. It is beneficial to talk about controversial things at school because at home, your parents might have one idea they are trying to teach you. People are constantly trying to push their ideas on you and sometimes you don’t have that setting where you can speak your mind. In E2Y2, we have a mix of all sorts of people, including liberals and conservatives, rich and poor, all sorts of lifestyles, but we all have a voice.”

2018 Yearbook in her hands, Jordyn Dixon, Eurekana editor-in-chief, talks to freshmen during the freshman activities fair in the Commons, Sept. 10. “It was nice seeing young, new faces eager to get involved in school,” Dixon said. “That is really hard, especially when you're a freshman. I remember when I went to the freshmen activities fair, I didn’t know what I wanted to be involved in. It is nice to see it all displayed. It was a good platform for the students to see everything Eureka offers. A lot of people were really surprised that it was just one staff that creates the whole entire yearbook and that we do it in one year and that it is a class. The freshmen don’t know how big the high school yearbooks are so they were surprised at the size and complexity of the book. As enthusiastic as I am about being on staff, it is different sharing that with someone who you don’t know or who doesn’t know about what we do. You have to explain all the good aspects and see what parts they might like. You try to appeal to them specifically instead of in general.”

CORRECTION: Waheed is Persian, not Indian as the Hub had previously reported. Art on display, Iraj Waheed (12) talks with a viewer at the Art Show, March 22. “I like how artists get represented,” Waheed said. “They finally get a debut in front of other people and the student body gets to see what they have done. In AP, we get to pick a certain theme so I picked my heritage--Persian. It was cool to see that being brought into the school."

Stretching her skill set, Marisol Lopez, butterfly, swims the 400m free relay for the first time all season at the girls meet against Mehlville, Jan. 30. “The meet went well,” Lopez said. “It was hard at first. I had to do some stuff I hadn't done all year, which was different for me.I like how swimming gets me in shape for my other sports, like soccer and softball. It is another way for me to work out in winter. The best part is how the swim team is like a family. When it comes to hard stuff, we come together and bond.” The Wildcats won, 90 to 88.

Typography learned, Emily Holtzmann (11) finishes her project about America on Adobe Illustrator in Diana Bashirian’s Graphic Design 1 fifth hour class, Nov. 29. “I like the fact I can alter and add to any photo in any way by using Photoshop and making something completely new from an original picture,” Holtzmann said. “I enjoy this project because anyone who views typography looks at it as a whole and sees an image of some sort. They have to look closely in at the details to really see it for what it is, which could be a combination of meaningless words or something that actually means something to the piece.”
