Know: The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported a security breach at Lambert International Airport that caused them to evacuate a portion of the airport, June 11.
Inform: Concourse C was evacuated due to what is believed to be an equipment failure. A dozen flights were delayed in this concourse and anyone who went through security checkpoints before the breach went through the checkpoints again after the evacuation.
Care: Lambert is the closest international airport to Eureka, so those students traveling a far distance typically do so through that airport. The security process at the airports is so long and so complex, but it is only in place to prevent real emergencies at airports from happening.
National
Know: At least 50 people were killed and 53 were wounded in a mass shooting in Orlando, Florida that took place at Pulse, a gay nightclub, early June 12.
Inform: The gunman, 29 year old Omar Mateen, armed himself with an assault weapon and a handgun when he attacked the nightclub and additionally pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. Police shot and killed him.
Care: This is the deadliest attack on the LGBT+ community in U.S. history, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history and the deadliest U.S. terror attack since 9/11. People all over the country are showing their love and care for everyone affected. We in the Eureka community should use this tragedy to remember to treat all of our peers with respect, as something like this could happen anywhere at any time, even in Eureka.
International
Know: A bomb exploded in Beirut, Lebanon and destroyed several cars and a major bank, June 12. Two people have minor wounds.
Inform: The bomb exploded under a car during iftar, a meal in which observing Muslims, a majority of Lebanon’s population, break their daily fasts during the holy month of Ramadan. A branch of Blom Bank suffered from severe damage and is believed to be the target of the explosion.
Care: It’s summer, so international travel is always a popular vacation idea. Bombings take place frequently at international destinations, so it is increasingly more and more important to keep in touch with loved ones who are out of the country.
