Off the field and on the field athletes are very committed to what they are involved in and take time out of their busy schedule to keep up relationships with family and friends.
Haley Deakin, 12, spends most of her time consumed in sports including softball in the fall and track and field in the spring. During the summer she also plays softball for a club team.
Many athletes perform beyond the field as well including things like hard classes and being involved in a club.
“AP Biology and pre-calculus are my most time consuming classes outside of school. I am also very involved in HOSA, StuCo, Onstage, NHS, and SWAT” Deakin said.
Having a job can be very important for high school students to earn money and to learn life skills. It can also be an outlet for students outside of school.
“I have a few jobs. In the summer I mainly work at Ellisville Athletic Association as a concession worker two or three days a week. I also work at batting cages a few times a week, but mostly in the winter. Then I also give catching and hitting lessons once a week in the off season” Deakin said.
Juggling sports, challenging classes, clubs, and a job can be very time consuming but when Deakin has free time she chooses to spend it very wisely. Making sure to read for a few hours a week and hanging out with friends when she has some spare time. Sports may be very important to Deakin but she has other values as well.
“My education and my family are very important to me because I can always rely on them. When I can’t play sports anymore I hope to have a good career and a supportive family around me” Deakin said.
Adelyn Moore, 11, is a varsity cheerleader during the fall and winter. Moore spends extra time outside of class on AP Government and Algebra 2. Moore is also very involved in the clubs at our school.
“I am in PAC (Principals Action Committee) and I am on the Purple Star Committee that welcomes military kids into eureka when they move here and we do a lot of stuff for Veterans Day and graduates that are signing into the military” Moore said.
Moore also spends her summer time working at the Lions Park concession stands and in the winter she dogsits and babysits. Looking past sports, school, and work, what really means the most to Moore is her family.
“Outside of sports, something that is very important to me is my family because I have four younger sisters and I enjoy spending time with them and being with them as much as I can before I leave for college,” Moore said.
