For years, this restaurant has been a big part of Eureka’s community, from serving only barbeque, to expanding the choices with breakfast options, Super Smokers has continued to please costumers and provide good meals. Super Smokers first opened in 1996 and became a spot for locals looking for delicious meals and a welcoming atmosphere. In 2022, the restaurant transitioned into a more diner-style restaurant called Papa’s Diner, expanding its menu and changing the vibe.
However, despite its long history and loyal customers, it recently shut down, marking an end to the nearly three decades of friendly service.
The closing has affected more than just the customers, many Eureka high school students are left without jobs and wondering where to apply. Eme Marschuetz, 11, explains her struggles with the loss in making money.
“I don’t have a lot of money anymore and I used to use my tips for gas money, so I have to find a different way to make gas money”. Marschuetz said
In a small town like Eureka, the limited amount of jobs has made it difficult for students to find new employment. For some students, finding another restaurant job in a small town like Eureka can be even more difficult. Georgia Banderman, 12, expresses her concerns.
“It’s been hard trying to find a new job, I do think there are a lot of job opportunities in eureka, but I want to work in another restaurant so that kind of limited my options”, Banderman said.
Now, switching the spotlight from students to the actual small town of Eureka, local educators notice how much a small business closing can affect the surrounding community. Economic challenges can make it difficult for businesses to stay open, even when they are well-established and supported. Christopher Herbert, economics teacher, gives his insight on economic issues.
“Small businesses face a lot of challenges, the minimum wage just got raised in Missouri, so they have to pay their workers more. Also with inflation, the cost of everything they need is very high.” Herbert said.

“A big loss is the involvement of Super Smokers in the community, and the donations they made to schools and the communities”. Herbert said.
The economic challenges, including rising minimum wages and inflation, have made it difficult for small businesses to survive. As Eureka adjusts to the loss of Papa’s Diner, the closure serves as a reminder of how deeply local business impacts students, workers and the whole community. The closing marks more than just an end of a restaurant. It represents the loss of a place where kids earned their first paychecks, families enjoyed and shared meals, and a place where the community could connect.
