This is Newton’s fourth year on staff where she serves as the managing editor on the 2018 Eurekana staff. One word to describe her: eccentric. Conversation she wants to have with the world: “Why can’t we all just get along?” At Eureka Newton is also involved with wrestling. Outside of school Newton enjoys taking photos, watching movies, and basically doing anything together with her friends. Art appreciated, French 4 students pose behind an exhibit at the St. Louis Art Museum for the French 4 and 5 field trip, Feb.15. “I liked being able to understand someone explaining things in French about a painting,” Madison Landolt, French 4 said. “The docents made hand gestures and emphasized words we had learned. Even if I hadn't heard the word before I could generally understand it. It was cool to be able to use French outside of the classroom.”

A half-cent sales tax to fund a new police station, address the Allenton bridge and provide flood-prevention measures will be on the ballot in April. “I got to see what kind of condition the police station is in and what it is like working there,” Warner said. “It just a different environment than you would expect from a police station. I was expecting it to be roomy, but it was tight everywhere. Everywhere you walked it was cramped. You could tell it was old. It was dilapidated.”

Cold weather forcing the class inside, Kay Satterthwaite (10) dribbles to score a goal in Ralph Gianino’s first hour Team Sports C class, Jan. 12. “I like how small my class is,” Satterthwaite said. “We all know each other, and we have fun together. When you are on your team, everyone is included. In a lot of team sports classes, many students are just sitting around and not participating, but in our class everyone plays and it gets competitive. I would rather play volleyball because I used to play, but the other sports are fun.”

On the road to state, Anna Lombardo. girls varsity cross country, runs toward the finish line at Parkway Central High School to complete sectionals, Oct. 28. “It is really exciting to be able to go to state as a freshman,” Lombardo said. “I didn’t think I could have ever gotten this far at the beginning of the year. We grew so much this year just over the past couple months. I think we will be even faster next year with all of the hard work we put into our practices and the support that all of us girls give each other. My favorite part of the season was the moment we found out that were were moving on to state as a team. It was definitely a special moment for all of us, third place [at sectionals] took us all by surprise.”

Celebrating National Coming Out Day, Anastasia Torres and Devin Gordon (12) meet to talk about their experiences at the Gender and Sexual Advocacy meeting, Oct. 11. “National Coming Out Day means to be gay and why it's important to celebrate that,” Torres said. “You never notice how much you have and how much you are able to tell about yourself until you're not allowed to or feel safe doing it. National Coming Out Day is about you just thinking, ‘Screw it! I am going to do it anyway.’ I am worth being myself, and I’m allowed to be something everyone is allowed to be.”

Triumphant, Zoe Gustafson and Nate Koenig (11) win the cup stacking challenge for Spirit Week points during second lunch, Oct. 3. “My competitive spirit as well as desire to win took over, and I really wanted to win the Spirit Points for my grade,” Koenig said. “I like to think of myself as a thoroughbred race horse that simply cannot lose. With my years of experience as a cup stacker, once the hands get moving it was all over for the other teams. There is no better feeling than that of victory.”

Native of the country of Colombia, Daniella Mass, America’s Got Talent semi-finalist, sings to Dania Ramirez’s fourth hour Spanish 3 students, Sept. 14. “Her voice was amazing,” Jordan Hrabko (10) said. “Her life and how she came to the United States at 16 was interesting. It was the best presentation I had ever seen. She not only can sing in Spanish but 10 other languages, too. I like to see presentations in different languages because it isn’t just sitting there and taking notes, looking at a SMARTboard but interacting with people from those cultures and learning those things.”

Highway 109 closed, Dec. 30, 2015, EHS has weathered two historic floods in less than two years. The PE facilities have yet to be fully restored since the flood of 2015. Residents in hurricane-hit states have a long road to recovery, and the hurricane season isn't over yet.
