Game recap: Swimming to success
Swimming takes second place in the 2014 conference finals
The Boys Varsity Swim Team put on quite a performance Thursday night at Lindbergh High school where the 2014 Suburban West Conference finals were held, Oct. 30.
Competing against five other area teams including: Lafayette, Marquette, Lindbergh, Mehlville and Parkway South, the Aquacats placed second behind Marquette.
“I am so incredibly proud of this team,” Ms. Sharon Wasson, head swim coach, said. “They all work together. Second in conference against these teams as seen tonight is pretty tough to do.”
With multiple second and third place finishes from Brendan Harris and Jake Haefner and a first place finish from Justin King, the Aquacats tallied 192 points in the first half of the meet.
- King: 1st place in the 200-yard freestyle relay and 3rd place in the 500-yard freestyle event.
- Harris: 2nd Place in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
- Haefner: 3rd Place in the 100-yard freestyle event.
Relays were a big part of the Aquacats success Thursday, including the medley and freestyle relays.
The 200-yard freestyle relay was a very a close race, resulting in another third place finish for the Aquacats.
The night ended with a bang with the final and most intense event of the night: the 400-yard freestyle relay had fans from all schools on their feet and roaring.
Off to a good start thanks to Haefner, the team remained in the middle of the pack for most of the race with King, the teams anchor, sealing the fourth place spot in the event.
“Everyone on the team did really great,” Harris said. “It takes a group effort to come together and put together some good swims.”
The team totaled 390 points Thursday night and and are now looking ahead to state.
The Aquacats have 19 swimmers who qualified for state this year.
“This will be the largest state team we’ve had in the past 21 years that I have been coaching,” Coach Wasson said.
