Words on her hand, Kayla Hill (10) models for a photography class, March 6. “I’m usually a model. A lot of times, they’re really interesting ideas people come up with. They’re really powerful. I really enjoy being able to work with the people who are taking the photos and get them what they want,” Hill said. “My best friend is in Photo 2 and she wanted me to be a model for an abuse photo. She’s used me ever since then. It sends out a message, but it scares a lot of people. People know exactly what they want me to do, so they have me move in a specific way and do exactly what they want and it turns out exactly how they think it will.”

This is the first time Eureka hockey has ever won any championship. “It was magical to win,” Markovitz said. “We have been to many competitions, but we typically lose because those are difficult. We knew we could win and then we just ran with that. Our season wasn’t great. We eventually just lost all our shame and threw everything into winning.” The Wildcats won, 6 to 1.

Erasing her paper, Jessica Smegner (10) works on her still-life project in Kristina Welch’s sixth hour Art Fundamentals class, Feb. 21. “I don’t really enjoy art,” Smegner said. “I am just taking it because it is required. I like history and science, those are my two favorites. I don’t like working on my still-life especially when the lights are off. It makes me tired.”

Grabbing the ball after a rebound, Matthew Edwards, point guard, brings the ball back into Eureka’s possession during the boys varsity basketball game against McCluer North, Feb. 8. ““Playing as a point guard, you have to watch the court the whole time. Playing McCluer North was tough,” Edwards said. “We have to keep them in front of us at all times so we know what they are doing. They are a pretty good team. A lot of their guys are fast and can get rebounds quick. We had to watch them carefully. I enjoy how in basketball I can be myself on the court. I fell in love with the game in middle school and it was always something I loved to do.” The Wildcats lost, 46 to 55.

Charging toward the net, Jhalon Asher-Sanders, point guard, tries to get a shot in during the boys varsity basketball game against Parkway South, Feb. 1. “I contributed to the team by moving the ball down the court and scoring at every opportunity,” Asher-Sanders said. “Some challenges of being a point guard is reading the defense. You don’t know what the defense is doing and because of that, your path to the net can be a challenge. We didn’t follow our plays through. That is something we always struggle with. We always try to improve.” The Wildcats won, 50 to 37.

Saying one final goodbye, Ashley Hay (12) parades through a row of high-fives at Fairway Elementary School during the senior parade, May 14. “Although it was so bittersweet to walk through the halls of where I grew up, seeing the smiles on the faces of the kids made it so much better,” Hay said. “They were all so happy to see the ‘big kids’ and were cheering for us as we walked through the hallways with our caps and gowns. The thing I am most excited for at college is getting away and meeting new people. My Eureka friends and family will be missed, but I can’t wait to start what I have been waiting for.” Hay will attend Southeast Missouri State in the fall.
