Grace Munton

Grace Munton, Eurekana staff

Munton is serving her first year on the Eurekana staff. One word to describe her: "stubborn". Conversation she wants to have with the world: "Everyone is different in their own beautiful ways. We all need to accept and embrace those those difference. Just because you have more then others do not make you better, what you have does not make you you. Being self absorbed and conceded will get you nowhere, generosity goes a lot further. Words hurt harder then you know, be the bigger person and turn the other way." Munton is involved in dive and STUCO. Outside of school she enjoys diving, running, watching netflix, and taking photos. In the future Munton wants to either do something in the entertainment business or be a paramedic.

State game over, students, staff and community members surround the girls varsity volleyball team after the team returned to EHS at midnight from their state championship game against Lafayette at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, Nov. 3. “It felt awesome to score the winning hit,” Madison Scheer, outside hitter, said. “I finally felt like I did something for my team. It was instant excitement after that. I was so happy. My next years here, I am going to keep trying my best and push myself. I will keep my momentum up by working hard. There are no words to describe becoming a state champion my freshman year especially because EHS has never been there before. It was awesome to be on a team who has made history. It was an amazing feeling seeing everyone waiting for us. It made us all feel important and special.” The Wildcats won in both sets, 25-23.

Robot in the making, Declan Ortinau (11) organizes the junk box during Robotics after school, Oct. 26. “I am the programmer, so I write codes that essentially send messages to our robot to tell it what to do,” Ortinau said. “I need the computer to work. This day our computer was down, so I had to keep myself busy, so I organized the junk box. I wanted to join Robotics because I have known my whole life that I would probably end up being an engineer or in the STEM field of some sort. Robotics was the best option for high schoolers to get involved in engineering and possibly get scholarships and connections. I enjoy the collaboration I have with my teammates. Our team really does become good friends by the end, whether we started that way or not. We work together the whole time.”

Friday night lights started, Caleb Warren, varsity football, pushes his buddy, Noah Grobe, during the Best Buddies Friday Night Lights football game, Oct. 19. This event allows students with developmental and intellectual disabilities to experience a friday night football game. “I think friday night lights is fun to participate in because you take part in something that is bigger than you,” Warren said. “My favorite part was seeing Noah so happy when he made touchdowns. It allowed me to see how much I can do and how I should be grateful for everything..”

Baby in their arms, Lydia Greenhagen and Coreyn Mason (11) take their practice babies around the school during Rachel Haywood’s sixth hour child development 2 class, Sept. 21. “I like the attention that everyone gives you when you have the fake baby,” Mason said. “Everyone rushes around you and says ‘Awh, they are so cute, let me see.’ It is fun. Mrs. Haywood keeps everything about the challenges of parenting real with us. She doesn’t sugarcoat anything and makes us think about what our parents went through and what those of us who want to be parents will go through. My favorite part is the people in the class. We all bonded really quick so we have genuine conversations and we aren’t afraid of being judged.”

Bottle caps surrounding her, Emma Dill (12) sorts the bottle caps National Honors Society collected throughout last school year, Aug. 30. “NHS is a great opportunity to get involved in the community and get to know people in various grade levels,” Dill said. “It allows you to know people in this school which is difficult because the school is big. Staying after was fun because we got to listen to some music and I got to hang out with people I hadn’t seen since the end of last year.” The bottle caps will be melted down and transformed into benches to use in the outdoor classroom which will be behind the practice football field.

Season coming to an end, Lori Watson, host mother, walks alongside Magali Hermans (German exchange student) and Ryan Watson, host father, during the girls varsity lacrosse senior night, April 30. “I really love to be with the girls on the field,” Hermans said. “I love being able to cheer for them and support them. I love being a part of this team. Senior night was awesome. They all support me. The whole team cheered for me as I walked across the field. It was special. I love my host parents, too. They have supported me this whole year just like a family.”

Giving back to the community, NHS students pose at Cardinal Glennon Childrens Hospital with the Easter baskets they created and donated, March 30. “My back seat was stacked with baskets and my trunk was filled to the brim,” Julia Wizeman (11) said. “The nurses who picked up everything from us were so excited for the kids. Everyone I came into contact with that whole day was super grateful. It was cool to be able so see the impact that someone can have on someone theyve never even met. I would love to experience something like that again. Next year, I hope that the officers can rally everyone into making even more so we can impact more kids on Easter.”

First time using the camera, Logan Kayser (11) focuses in on a baseball during Robyn Stellhorn’s second hour Photo 1 class, Feb.21. “My thought was no matter what I end up doing for a career, I am going to end up having to take pictures for an event or something, so I might as well learn how to do it right,” Kayser said. “I like how using a film camera is a whole process. It is not as easy as taking a picture on a phone. It is more satisfactory because you have to put in a lot more work. Everything has to be right. I enjoy working with cameras because it isnt something I get do all the time.”

It isn’t as stressful as other classes. I like this project because I can implement things that I enjoy like video games. It makes me think about good things, and I don’t have to worry about homework or studying. I get to put what is in my mind on paper, and everyone can see it. That makes me happy.”
