This is Schneebeli's fifth semester on the Yearbook Production staff. Her hobbies include photography, designing and playing video games. One word she would use to describe herself is quirky. Schneebeli's dream job is to be either a counselor or an elementary school teacher.

In a yellow jersey, Brandon Hawkins (10) partakes in the Patriot Classic meet at Castlewood, October 17. “That was an exciting meet and it was by far my favorite course of the year. It was a flat course, so it was very fast. I tried keeping up with people but towards the end I started to slow down instead of going faster,” Hawkins said. “Overall, we did okay for JV, and the girls team has always done very well. However, timing was a struggle. We were a little late and it didn’t give us enough time to prepare. Although we didn’t win the meet, I think we were successful. We all came back with a really positive attitude and it helped us look for what to improve for districts.”

Surreal scene being worked on, Ryan Cundy (9) works on his project during Diane Bashirian’s sixth hour Graphic Design 1 class, Feb. 15. “I like drawing and computers, so I combined them and joined Graphic Design,” Cundy said. “In the surreal scene, I took the Rocky Mountains and combined extraterrestrial life to it. Graphic Design allows me to express myself. Photoshop allows you to have so much freedom.”

Tiny house coming along, Jadin Wallace-Grayer and Michael Jones (10) measures wood to cut in Gary Schneider’s sixth hour Geometry in Construction class, Jan. 10. “I took Geometry in Construction because I wanted to learn how to use geometry in everyday life. My favorite part is doing the construction and learning how to use the tools. It is exciting learning stuff like that,” Wallace-Grayer said. “Since were building a tiny house, it feels great knowing I will be able to be a part of something that will benefit someone else. I like having a part in something like that.”

Leading the way, Savannah Lesher (10) competes in the girls cross country sectionals meet at Big Drivers Golf Course, Oct. 27. “It was really up and down. Whenever Leah (Kleekamp) was with me, we were encouraging each other to keep fighting. We were just trying to make it through,” Lesher said. “I have been down for the past two weeks and I was hoping to bounce back at this meet. I wanted to help the team in whatever I could. I get to have the same experiences I had last year when I went to state. This year we have had to work a lot harder to reach our goals than we did last year. We have higher expectations of ourselves than we did last year. We all expected to be better than we were a year ago. This year it is better though because I know the girls better than I did my freshmen year. This is my second year. It isn’t more pressure than it was last year. I was blown away by the complexity of the race last year, but this year, I know what to expect.” The girls cross country team will be heading to state at Oak Hills Golf Course in Jefferson City to race at 9:00am on Sunday, Nov. 3. This is the team’s 25th state appearance.

Bubble wand in their hands, Grace Munton, Drew Derickson and Sydney Groff (10) blow bubbles for Student Council’s Bubble Friday in the front of school before classes begin, Oct. 12. “I like Bubble Friday because it is really fun and I can be there with my friends,” Munton said. “Its awesome to just welcome everyone into school that day. It makes people happy because they’re always smiling and they try to pop the bubbles. It is important to have that close community because it makes everyone feel welcome. It is easier to just be around everyone then and there is no awkwardness.”

Conferences nearly complete, Nicholas Mungenast (12) runs the course at McNair Park during the boys cross country meet, Oct. 6. “I felt like the meet went well for me. I ran a good time and was up where I should be,” Mungenast said. “My dad told me I would be good at cross country and of course when started I was going in kicking and screaming but eventually after getting into it and doing all the summer conditioning, it grew on me and now I love it. The best part of being on the team is having that support group for you. It is a very much an individual sport with working on your own times, but having that team there really pushes you to do better. Goals I have for myself are to go back to state again this year and get all-state. I want to also get as close as I can to breaking 16 minutes in a 5K.” Varsity boys finished 10th, while Mungenast finished in the top 30.

Almost 2 mile run over with, Mikayla Gregory (9) drinks a milkshake from Culver’s after cross country’s Culver’s run, Oct. 2. “I liked running with my friends,” Gregory said. “It was fun to be able to talk the whole time. We warmed up around the softball fields, then jogged to Berry Park, then started the run to Culver’s. The run is something cross country has done this before. I did cross country because during the summer, I thought ‘I am not doing anything, why not do cross country?’ So I went to the practices and then joined the team. The community is great and it helps me be healthier. I am trying to play basketball in the winter, so this helps me stay in shape for that. I have made a lot of friendships with other classmen and with most of the freshmen on the team. The people I didn’t know were really nice to me and supportive.”

Ball flying towards her, Haley Tate, pitcher, gets ready to swing during softball’s hit-a-thon, Sept. 14. The hit-a-thon was to raise money for the Jason Motte Foundation for cancer research. Players collected pledges for the number of hits they would get out of 30 pitches. Eureka staff members could also donate $10 dollars to take five swings of their own against the coaches. “I liked that we raised money for cancer and had fun doing it at the same time, Tate said. “Coach Paul Arway and his wife have been wanting to raise money for cancer with the team for a while. They came up with this hit-a-thon idea. Both JV and varsity participated, but at the end, some parents decided to donate so they could get a few pitches, too. There were about 30 kids and five parents. I think fundraising for anything in general is important because there are people out there who need our help. They don’t have anyone or anything to go to. I think it is amazing that in just one short day we could raise a lot of money for people in need.” Tate estimated that they raised $10,000.

Going downhill and uphill while trying to maintain your speed in the mud was hard. Ive liked running since I was little. It also makes me more positive about myself and my accomplishments. I enjoy the people I am surrounded by and the environment that cross country provides. Each and every person on the team has their own personality and we all work together.” Girls varsity placed fifth and girls JV placed third overall.

Quiz coming up, Casey Hays and Gabriel Counts (9) review basic phrases during Emily Ewald’s sixth hour Spanish 1 class, Sept. 6. “I took Spanish because I want to learn to be fluent,” Counts said. “Also, to get into a four year university, it looks better if you stick with a language. I want to be able to travel or use it in business so knowing Spanish can help me. I like the class because my classmates are nice and my teacher is helpful. She always helps us right before quizzes and tests so we are ready for it. The most difficult part is learning all the words you know, but in a whole different way. It can be mind-boggling.”

Dunked for a cause, Andy Gensler, language arts, gets dunked during the BBQ fundraiser for Carolyn Baremore, science, May 11. “Mrs. Baremore is awesome,” Gensler said. “If I could pick a spirit animal, it would be Mrs. Baremore. She just brings so much enthusiasm for life and teaching. The number of kids I have had who have told me she connected with them when no one else was able to is remarkable. She is amazing and anything we could do to support her needed to be done. I just liked to see the outpouring support from the community. It was great to see so many people show up on a Friday afternoon to me and is just a powerful expression of caring and love. Eureka sees people come together to help each other as often as they can. Whether it is something school-sponsored, like a canned food drive, where people don’t have to but want to, just give to help the community or sandbagging with the floods. Anytime anyone is in need, I have never heard of another school who responds so quickly and generously.” The community raised enough to meet two year’s worth of out-of-pocket expenses to support her ongoing treatment.

I loved that my friends and I could do all those activities like the bouncy houses or tug of war while enjoying a lovely day. When we went to the award ceremony to highlight our achievements, it felt like our hard work was shown off. It was great to see all my friends get awards alongside me. It made me feel good to have those achievements recognized and being rewarded with a break from school. The carnival is a great day. Some people leave school and miss out, but then they miss a fun day that is less stressful than a normal school day.”

Midterm packet in front, Megan Mocker (10) works on a problem during Michael McDonald’s second hour Algebra 2 class, March 21. “I was stressed out for the midterm,” Mocker said. “A few units were harder than others and some of the concepts were confusing to me. The differences in when to do what steps was hard. The people in my class are nice. I have friends in that class, so we talk and help each other when don’t know what we are doing. I studied for it, but I probably could have done better.”
